Vinyl Siding: A Sustainable Building Product

Apart from its durability, affordability and low-maintenance qualities, vinyl siding also helps play a vital and growing role in ensuring the long-term health of the planet. For siding manufacturer CertainTeed™, it is the only cladding product that can be recycled multiple times into a new one. They proved this with the creation of a “closed-loop” program, also known as the “cradle-to-cradle” program.

Harmony Home Improvement, a leading vinyl siding installation services company in the area, discusses more.

Cradle-to-Cradle Program

This program is a response to market demand for a sustainable building product. It allows CertainTeed’s CedarBoards™ insulated siding to be manufactured with recycled content, including siding tear-offs and construction scrap.

The manufacturer partnered with distributors and recyclers who leave bins at their warehouses around the U.S. Contractors can bring scraps of old vinyl siding to the distributors. CertainTeed can then have the old material recycled to their specifications and buy them back from the recyclers. Everyone benefits from this scheme—contractors can promote that they are recycling materials, while distributors can sell this “green” initiative for contractors who then gains visibility with customers.

A Green Siding Material

Siding and deck installation services companies agree on the positive impact of sustainable materials on the environment. For so long, consumers believed vinyl siding to have a significantly larger environmental impact than competing materials. CertainTeed proved this wasn’t the case when they subjected their vinyl siding products to a life cycle assessment (LCA).

The analysis gave them a satisfying result: vinyl siding is a green product. It leads the way in sustainability, based on the LCA’s criteria, which included raw materials, transportation, production and installation.
